Skybus Airlines

Skybus was an ultra low-cost airline startup based in Columbus, Ohio, and modeled after Ryanair. The tickets were inexpensive, but everything else was extra. It was a relatively new concept in the U.S. at the time, so how to introduce it? Rather than simply focus on the cheap aspect, we came up with the idea of Fleap, making it more of a mindset. We defined it as a positive attribute, starting with a logo, guidelines and some manifesto-like objects and established a tone that pushed the fun personality we wanted for the brand.

We created a huge series of posters and ads that ran in local pubs and were posted at airports where the carrier was going to fly, along with price point-focused floor decals that were placed in businesses around the Columbus area. The big focus for launch, however was a takeover of Columbus to announce Skybus was here.

We had secured permissions for building wraps and murals, a branded luggage train to travel around downtown, installations, along with a plan for transit advertising, videos and more. The reason you see comps here? Well, we were in production when, let’s say, shenanigans occurred. There was a shakeup and funding was stopped. Skybus eventually flew for a short time. Maybe it would have been much longer had there been an orange luggage train running around Ohio. I still like the writing, though.
